| | National Service Opportunities at British Council, DFID & British High Commision |    | | | NATIONAL SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES AT THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION, DEPARTMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OR BRITISH COUNCIL
The British High Commission (BHC) in Accra, in conjunction with the National Service Secretariat, is inviting graduates to serve their period of National Service in one of the above-mentioned organizations during 2012-2013. The BHC’s goals is to attract motivated and talented students to savour the experience of working in one of the overseas posts of the British foreign service and other United Kingdom government departments and organisations with offices outside the UK.
The BHC is keen to invite graduates who are keen to take the opportunity to learn some of the basics, and more broadly experience the day-to-day office-based life, in an environment that shows the full range of activities undertaken as part of a dynamic bilateral relationship in the foreign policy context.
In Accra there are three separate organisations representing different aspects of this bilateral relationship.
British High Commission (BHC)
This office includes many of the work-streams that constitute the traditional areas of foreign policy and the bilateral relationship. These include political analysis, the promotion of UK trade opportunities in Ghana, the provision of public services to UK and Ghanaian nationals (such as consular and visa work), and the support functions required to ensure that these “front-line” activities are effective – a range of corporate services functions.
Department for International Development (DFID)
DFID is the UK Government department responsible for leading the UK’s fight against global poverty as well as delivering UK aid around the world. In Ghana, UK government development assistance is delivered through a series of programmes designed to improve the provision of services in the education, health, food and nutrition, water and sanitation, climate and environment, governance, conflict prevention and wealth creation fields.
British Council (BC)
The British Council is the UK’s international organization for education and cultural relations. Built upon the foundation of people-to-people links, the council seeks to improve the capacity of Ghanaians through the provision of professional skills training, facilitating individual and professional exchanges, and building links between professional institutions. These exchanges take place within the context of a wider effort to build access and understanding between Africa and the global community.

OBJECTIVE
Our collective objective for this National Service scheme is to
- provide students with the opportunity to test their interest in a particular career before permanent commitments are made
- develop a student’s skill in the application of theory in a practical work situation
- develop skills and techniques directly applicable to the careers students want to pursue in the future
- aid students in making the transition from college to full time employment
- increase a student’s sense of responsibility
- help students acquire good work habits/behaviours.
Undertaking a National Service placement at the BHC, DFID or British Council is a unique experience which will provide the student with
- Work-based learning opportunities
- Exposure to international thinking and approaches.
Duration of Service
Twelve months, from October to September each year.
Allowance
The National Service allowance will be paid at the end of the month.
Selection criteria
- Applicant’s GPA should be between 3.5 – 4.0 (attach a photocopy of last semester’s examination result slip)
- Applicants must be studying one of the following courses; marketing, political science, sociology, psychology or social work.
- Applicants must have good communication skills.
- Applicants must complete final year between May and August 2012.
- Applicants must be residents of the Accra metropolitan district, or Tema.
- Only applicants shortlisted will be contacted.
- Applicants should pass basic security clearance from the Police (which the BHC will arrange).
- Applicants should be able to use Microsoft office and type at a minimum speed of 25 words per minute
