The Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall, named after the first female graduate of the University of Ghana was officially inaugurated at a ceremony attended by the Chairman and Members of Council, University officials, family members and friends of Elizabeth Frances Sey, née Biney.

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey recalled the painstaking ground work which resulted in the decision to name the fourth hall after alumna Elizabeth Sey. He said as an educationist, having taught at Wesley Girls’ High School, St. Louis Secondary School, and later at Achimota School, Elizabeth Sey upheld the value of education and the University was proud to honour her in this way. Professor Aryeetey noted that the University had a record of naming facilities after individuals, citing the other three new Halls, Hilla Limann Hall, Alexander Kwapong Hall, and Jean Nelson Aka Hall, inaugurated in 2010 and 2011.

Professor Kweku Osam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, read a short biography of Elizabeth Frances Sey after which, Supi Ebow Bentsi-Enchill, a brother of Elizabeth Sey gave brief remarks. Speaking on behalf of the family, Supi Bentsi-Enchill recalled with pride the sterling record of his sister’s achievements and noted that Elizabeth Sey was a humble lady. He extended gratitude to the University for honouring Elizabeth Sey in this manner and assured the University of maintaining a close relationship with the Hall and the University. He presented four portraits of Elizabeth Frances Sey to the University which was received by the Acting Master, Dr. Francis Nunoo.

Chairman of Council, His Lordship Justice Dr. Samuel Kofi Date-Bah, who gave the final remarks acknowledged the work of the past Council, chaired by Mr. Anthony Oteng-Gyasi and immediate Past Vice-Chancellor, Professor C.N.B. Tagoe, during whose tenure the concept for the new halls was conceived and developed. He said that the “centre of gravity” had now shifted to the location of the new halls, and mentioned that the University had seen many new developments which sometimes come as a surprise to alumni and other visitors who have not had the opportunity to visit the Campus in the last couple of years. He was grateful to all who had supported the University in realizing this dream.

The Chairman of Council, later cut the ribbon to signal the formal opening of the Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall, after which the plaque was jointly unveiled by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey and Mr. Kweku K. Sey, son of Elizabeth Frances Baaba Sey.

A number of family members and friends of Elizabeth Frances Sey attended the ceremony, among who were Mr. J.L.M. Amissah, Mrs. Gloria Opoku, Mrs. Ellen Essilfie, Dr. J.V.L. and Mrs. Phillips and Professor Francis Allotey.

The ceremony now marks the completion of the inauguration of the four new halls of residence for students which will provide accommodation for about 7,000 students. The new halls are self-contained with washroom facilities, study desks and with large courtyards. Following from the concept of the tutorial system existing in the traditional halls of residence, the University has appointed Masters and Senior Tutors. Students have also elected interim officers to the Junior Common Room,
