| | University of Ghana Welcomes "Freshers" |  | | |
The University of Ghana has officially welcomed over fourteen thousand, three hundred and ninety-five (14,395) students enrolled for the 2011/2012 academic year at a Matriculation Ceremony held at Legon. This number, the Vice-Chancellor revealed, constitutes 52% of the total number of applicants to the University admitted to programmes at the Legon Main Campus, the Accra City Campus, the College of Health Sciences at Korlebu, as well as to the University’s Distance Education programmes.
In addition, 317 international students from Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Cameroun, Mozambique, South Korea and China have also enrolled in the 2011/2012 academic year.

In his Matriculation Address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, extended a warm welcome to the students and called on the matriculants to strive for excellence and to be disciplined. He advised students to take advantage of every facility available in order to develop themselves fully in preparation for future opportunities as well as challenges.
The Vice-Chancellor advised the students to use their “new-found” freedom responsibly. “Make time for social activities like scholarly lectures, sports and religious activities…, but do not allow these to make you lose sight of the main reason why you are here”. He also urged international students to make use of the services offered by the International Programmes Office of the University.
The Vice-Chancellor listed a number of new developments initiated by the University to help expand infrastructure aimed at enhancing teaching and learning. He mentioned that the approval by Parliament of a loan facility from an Israeli Bank for the construction of a Teaching Hospital as part of the relocation of the College of Health Sciences from Korle Bu to Legon. He said the sod-cutting ceremony for this was performed by the President of Ghana, Prof. J. E. A. Mills early this year which he mentioned will see the commencement of the College of Health Sciences Project. In addition, a sod-cutting ceremony was also performed by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Mr. Amissah-Arthur, for the construction of a Complex for the Department of Economics, which is to be funded by the Bank of Ghana.
Later, the Registrar, Mr. J.M. Budu administered the Matriculation Oath to the students which calls on students “to observe the regulations of the university, to obey the Vice-Chancellor and those to whom their obedience is required; to study diligently, to seek the truth, and to promote the good of the University”.

Dawud Yakubu, a Bachelor of Science in Administration student from the Commonwealth Hall signed the Matricula on behalf of the matriculating class of 2011. He delivered an address on “Expectations of University Life” on behalf of matriculants in which he urged all stakeholders to play their roles effectively in order to make their years of study devoid of all forms of distractions and disruptions such as demonstrations and strike actions.
The brief ceremony was attended by university officials, hall authorities, members of convocation and a large public audience which included parents, guardians and other family members of the matriculants. Matriculants later signed the Matricula in their respective Halls of residence and other facilities to signal their official entry into the University of Ghana.
