| | University Of Ghana Honours 2011 Retirees |  | | | One hundred and seventeen former members of staff of the University of Ghana who retired in July this year, have been honoured by the University at an awards and send-off ceremony held by the University.
The retirees, who included the two immediate past Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Prof. Kwesi Yankah and Prof. Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu, and the former Provost of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (CACS), Prof. Benjamin K. Ahunu, were presented with Certificates of Service and End-of-Service packages, with deserving staff additionally receiving Long Service Awards.
The Chairman of the University Council, Justice Dr. Samuel K. Date-Bah, presided over the ceremony. He conveyed appreciation on behalf of Council and the University community to the retirees for their diligent and faithful work which has helped the University to thrive. He urged the retirees to continue to avail their experiences to the university when called upon.
Justice Date-Bah noted that as a result of the modernization of the University’s governance systems, which was made possible by the new University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 806), coupled with the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of making the University a world-class institution, an exciting working environment has been created at the University. While wishing the retirees good health and happy and prosperous times in the future, the Chairman of Council, urged them to see retirement as a period of bliss.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, in his remarks, also expressed appreciation to the retirees for their invaluable services to the University. He called on them to continue to act as the University’s ambassadors in the wider world. He particularly called on them to assist in publicizing the “International Education Fair and Homecoming Event”, to be hosted by the University in November. Prof. Aryeetey said it was necessary for both the University and retired staff to continue to support each other, adding that the University was open to suggestions on how to make retirement more meaningful to its former employees.
The Chairman of Council and the Vice-Chancellor presented Long Service Awards to the retiring Administrative and Professional Senior Members. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. E. K. Osam presented certificates to the retiring Academic Senior Members. He was assisted by the President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Langbong Bimi.
Prof. John Gyapong, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development did the presentation of certificates to the Senior Staff category. He was assisted by the Legon Branch Chairman of the Federation of University Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), Mr. Kyei Baffour. The certificates for Junior Staff category was presented by the Registrar, Mr. Joseph M. Budu, who was assisted by the Chairman of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Mr. Augustine Saakuur-Karbo.
Earlier Dr. Bimi, Mr. Kyei Baffour and Mr. Saakuur-Karbo, representing their unions and associations, delivered felicitations to the retiring members of their associations. An appeal was also made to the newly retired staff by the University of Ghana Pensioners’ Association (UGPA)to consider joining the Association.
The immediate past Provost of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, Prof. B.K. Ahunu who spoke on behalf of the retirees, thanked the University for appreciating and acknowledging the services that they rendered. He reminded the retirees not to lose sight of the University’s contribution to whatever they have achieved.
In brief remarks, Registrar Mr. Budu described the Retirees’ awards ceremony as one of the most important events on the University’s annual calendar. He also congratulated them and advised them to continue to uphold the image of the University.
The event was attended by the Director of Human Resource and Organisational Development, Mrs. Mercy Haizel Ashia, and Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, as well as family members of the retirees.
