Professor Anyidoho Launches "The Place We Call Home"pdf print preview print preview
 
Professor Kofi Anyidoho, a Professor of English Literature and first Occupant of the Kwame Nkrumah Chair in African Studies, has recently launched a book titled “The Place we call Home” and some poems. The book, which comes with a CD, is his 17th published work.

Launching the book, Professor Kofi Awoonor, Chairman of the Council of State, himself a distinguished writer, described the book as a monument built by the author to pay homage to African writers. He noted that Professor Anyidoho was a man of talent, cool, deep and enduring. He lauded him for his tremendous role played in the University of Ghana, throughout his years of service. He congratulated the University of Ghana and the Institute of African Studies for furthering the vision of the first President of the Republic of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s vision by instituting a Chair in his honour.

In brief remarks, Professor Anyidoho who gave a spectacular performance in the recital of some of his poems called on the media to develop interest in publishing literary works.

In appreciation of  the various roles and tremendous support to him, Professor Anyidoho presented a copy each of the book to his wife Professor Akosua Anyidoho, a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, and his uncle Kodzovi Nugbegble Anyidoho.

The Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Rev. Professor Cephas Omenyo in congratulating Professor Anyidoho for the poems, referred to the book as a metaphor of a journey into the future through the past.

Professor Femi Osofisan, a dramatist, poet and literary critic who reviewed the book described Professor Anyidoho as a paradoxical voice of the old yet contemporary. He paid special tribute to early translators for translating English texts into various local languages.


In his remarks, the Chairman for the occasion, Togbui Kporku III, Dufia of Alakple who was full of praise for the author described his eloquence as awesome and his works full of charm and humility. He added that the launch was the author’s rebirth in the culture and tradition which has brought his this far.

Togbui Kporku used the opportunity to advise Ghanaians to be careful about their utterances, because the tongue is more powerful than the sword.

There were other remarks by Dr. Hellen Yitah, Head of English Department and Professor Akosua Adomako-Ampofo, Director of the Institute of African Studies.

Other dignitaries present at the ceremony were Professor Emeritus J. H. Nketia of the Institute of African Studies, Professor Atukwei Okai, President of the Pan-African Writers’ Association (PAWA), Professor Ama Ata Aidoo, a renowned writer, staff and students of the Faculty of Arts as well as family and friends of the author.
