| | Finatrade Partners CACS On Model Farm Project |  | | | The College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (CACS) has received a cheque for GH¢30,000 from the Finatrade Foundation, to support its Model Farm Project. The project, which is a partnership between the College and Finatrade, is located at the University’s botanical gardens.
Speaking at a short ceremony to launch the project, an Executive Council Member of Finatrade Foundation, Dr. Kobina Quansah, said the purpose of the project is to provide hands-on training experience to students of agriculture. He said that the project is expected to imbue in them entrepreneurial skills that will help make the students self-employable after graduation.
Dr. Quansah said the model farm will not only serve as a centre for applied research in various fields of agriculture but will provide technical assistance to farmers from surrounding communities.
The Provost of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (CACS), Prof. Ben Ahunu acknowledged the tremendous support the College has been receiving from Finatrade over the years. He mentioned in particular the Finatrade Foundation Scholarship Scheme for undergraduate and post graduate Agricultural Science students. He noted that even though the College was not the first to start such a project, it is committed to set a pace for others to follow. While expressing gratitude to Finatrade, Prof. Ahunu assured the Foundation that the money would be put to good use.
The brief presentation ceremony was attended by members of the Project Committee, namely Prof. Daniel Obeng-Ofori (Chairman), Dr. George T.M. Kwadzo, Dr. (Mrs) Irene S. Egyir from the Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness, Dr. T. Adogla-Bessa of the Livestock and Poultry Research Centre, Legon, Dr. S.D. Boateng and Ms Jemima Yakah, both of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Prof. Ofosu-Anim, Head of the Department of Crop Science, a co-opted member, Mrs. Patricia Tsikata, Assistant Registrar at the College who is Secretary to the Committee, and the President of the Ghana Association of Agriculture Students (GAAS).
The delegation from the Finatrade Foundation, the media and staff of the College were conducted round the farm by Mr. Augustine Tonyigah, a Chief Technician at the Biotechnology Centre.
