University Hospital Receives Support from Old Achimotans '73pdf print preview print preview

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey has presented assorted medical equipment and items consisting of 15 hospital beds and air mattresses, dressing trolleys, an echo machine, a defibrillator, and 28 boxes of a variety of medical supplies to three hospitals in Ghana, including the University of Ghana Hospital.

The donation was made possible by the 1973 Old Achimotans Association (OAA), the year group of the Vice-Chancellor, supported by “Glimpse of Hope”, a non-profit organization based in the USA. The contact between OAA ’73 and the Glimpse of Hope was facilitated by Mr. Albert Doku who is the Cardiology Manager at the Carolina Medical Center.

The Vice-Chancellor in brief remarks mentioned that the OAA ’73 Year Group was considering making this an annual donation to support the University Hospital and other health centres outside Accra. The other beneficiaries were the Achimota School Clinic and the Kintampo District Hospital.

Receiving the donation, Dr. Amenuveve expressed sincere gratitude to the OAA ’73 Year Group for coming to the hospitals’ needs, and hoped that others would emulate the act. He noted that the donation had come at a time when the hospital was beginning to re-brand itself to improve upon its health delivery. Dr. Amenuveve said the hospital was in the process of strengthening its specialist’s services in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and general surgery. He added that the hospital was also looking to strengthen other specialist areas such as HIV/AIDS, ophthalmology, E.N.T., and dermatology.

Dr. Amenuveve said that with the sinking of a bore-hole, the perennial water shortage the hospital experienced was going to be a thing of the past, especially when the system is mechanized. He also spoke of the redesign of some facilities to create two operating theatres and plans to relocate the hospital’s emergency ward closer to the service delivery points for patients to have easy access to these facilities. “With these changes and the planned upgrading of our facilities, it is possible to have a world-class hospital to cater for the entire sub-region” he added.
