Biomedical Engineering Students To Interact With Industrypdf print preview print preview
 
The University of Ghana and MEDIWISE International Company Limited (MWI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU aimed at facilitating a mutually beneficial long-term partnership in the training of biomedical engineers by blending both academic engineering skills alongside practical experience for the students of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana.

MEDIWISE is a professional biomedical technical support facility in Ghana, geared primarily towards the support of planning, acquisition and application of medical and other related equipment from any manufacturer and/or supplier into health facilities in the West African sub region.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Professor Sefa-Dedeh signed on behalf of the University of Ghana, while the Chief Executive Officer and Technical Director of MEDIWISE, Dr. Asman, signed on behalf of his company.

By this agreement, the Department of Biomedical Engineering of UG and MWI will work together to promote hosting of Biomedical Engineering students occasionally for lectures, conferences, seminars and training sessions on medical devices and their applications at MWI. They will also engage in identification and execution of research projects, problems or other works of interest to MWI on which students and staff of the Biomedical Engineering Department will work together with the technical staff of MWI.

The two parties have also agreed to explore opportunities for direct sponsorship by MWI of initiatives and facilities that will enhance the quality of training given to graduate and undergraduate level students of the Biomedical Engineering Department, and occasionally expose key technical staff and academic staff of the Biomedical Engineering Department to technological trends in workshops to aid in curriculum updates among others.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey lauded the partnership with MEDIWISE which both parties agreed would be of mutual benefit.

The Chief Executive Officer and Technical Director of MEDIWISE International Company Limited, Dr. P. R. Asman on his part, said his company appreciates and recognizes the efforts of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences of the University of Ghana in fostering a strong university-industry relationship. On his part, he was happy to be part of the development to promote high standards in Biomedical Engineering Education and integration into the industry. He said that it was in recognition of the potential of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University in enhancing knowledge capacity and technical operations that MEDIWSE considers the joint collaboration a very necessary aspect of its activities.

The brief signing ceremony was witnessed by Dr. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Madam Akorfa Bart-Plange from MEDIWISE.
