| | New Executive for Old Vandals Association | | | | A former national President of the Old Vandals Association, Dr. P.A. Kuranchie, Managing Director of the National Investment Bank has charged alumni of Commonwealth Hall (Old Vandals) to take another look at Vandalism and restore Commonwealth Hall to its old glory as a citadel of excellence in all spheres of endeavour.
He made these remarks when the newly-elected national executive of the Old Vandals Association of Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana was sworn in at an impressive and well attended ceremony.
Dr. Kuranchie, who was the Chairman for the occasion, lamented the current bastardisation of “vandalism” and traced the low level of discipline among the current crop of Vandals to the situation where there are two parallel student governments, the Junior Common Room (JCR) which is the one recognized by the university administration and the one led by the Chief Vandal. He urged the new national executive to co-operate with the Hall administration to correct the anomaly.
He recalled that Commonwealth Hall students, in the past, excelled in academics and sports and “vandalism” was seen as a way to release tension.
'Today our students are popular for the wrong reasons because what was seen as fun and entertainment is being turned into violent behaviour", he stressed.
His Lordship Justice Jones Dotse, of the Supreme Court, and alumnus of Commonwealth who swore in the new executive shared in the sentiments expressed by Dr. Kuranchie and called for the return to the good old days of excellence. He said of the 13 Supreme Court Judges in the country, four are Old Vandals, which is an indication of the quality of students that come out of Commonwealth Hall.
In his inaugural speech, the new national president of the Old Vandals, Alhaji Razak EI-Alawa, promised to work hand in hand with the University of Ghana Alumni Association and other hall alumni to promote peace on the University Campus.
Other members of the national executive sworn-in were Mr. Isaac Nketia Sarpong, Vice-President, Mr. Kwame Takyi, Secretary with Mr. Francis Avornyotse as his Vice, Mr. Owusu Donkor, treasurer and Dr. Clement Apaak, national organizer.
Prominent Old Vandals who graced the occasion included Mr. Willie Amarfio a legal practitioner, who is also the acting Asere Mantse under the stool name Nii Armar III, Prof. Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere, a former Master of Commonwealth, and former Vice-Chancellor of University of Ghana, Prof Harry Akussah, immediate past Master of the Hall, Mr. Tsri Apronti, of the World Bank, Sierra Leone, Mr. Douglas Adjarbeng, a legal practitioner and former Chairman of Division One League, Prof. Kwame Frimpong, Dean of GIMPA Law School and Mr. John Mbroh, former acting national president of the Old Vandals.

Amoa, Acting Director of Public Affairs of the University of Ghana and Mr. Kofi Dua-Adonteng, a former President of Old Vikings, were among the special guests present. | | | | Date Published: 02/06/2011 | | | | | |
