| | Prof. Benning Authors Book On Ghana's Administrative Areas And Boundaries | | | | Professor Raymond B. Benning, a Professor at the Department of Geography and Resource Development and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies, has launched a 305-page book titled “Ghana: Administrative areas and boundaries 1874 to 2009”.
Launching the book, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Honourable Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo said inadequate knowledge of geographical boundaries has made conflict resolution difficult at the local government level. He said the book was therefore timely and that his ministry as well as the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) would benefit from it especially at a time when more emphasis is placed on the role of the sub-structures of the District Assemblies.
The Minister added that in many cases purely administrative areas have been confused with traditional areas, adding that the book would become a reference material to resolve such issues. Honourable Ofosu-Ampofo noted that he believed that with the kind of research that had gone into the book, it would assist in resolving some of the disputes still outstanding in order to get the local government system run smoothly.
In a statement, Professor Raymond B. Benning paid tribute to Professor George Benneh, his former Geography teacher for his inspiration. He said the book proved that Geography could be applied in Administration. According to Prof. Benning, the book would inform readers about administrative boundaries which he said was relevant in determining the jurisdiction of chiefs, payment of taxes and decision making. He hoped the book will serve as additional channel of learning.
In his remarks, the Chairman for the occasion, Mr. K. B. Asante recalled the days of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah when administrators were their own consultants. He said this was no longer the case as people now depended on consultants for solutions to issues. He noted that electoral boundaries were now considered by many as administrative boundaries and there was therefore the need to clear the misconceptions.
Mr. Asante underscored the importance of History, and argued that Ghanaians need to know what exists, what has happened before and what is happening now. This he said would go a long way to enhance peace in the nation. He urged all relevant groups and individuals to read the book and put the information to good use.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Acting C.E.O. of Ghana Universities Press, Mr. John K. Bosomtwe said the book was the third to be published by the Press for the author, the first being in 1990. He described the book as well produced and hoped it would help government in its efforts to ensure good governance.
Dr. K. Sakyie of University of Ghana Business School who reviewed the book described it as insightful. | | | | Date Published: 06/05/2011 | | | | | |
