Newly-qualified Health Practitioners graduatepdf print preview print preview
 
A total of 840 newly-trained health service professionals have passed out of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) of the University of Ghana, at the College’s 10th Congregation and Swearing-In Ceremony which took place recently at the Legon campus.

The new professionals, made up of 124 medical doctors, 20 dental surgeons and 361 nurses as well as specialists in areas such as medical laboratory technology, physiotherapy, radiography, dietetics, epidemiology and disease control received various certificates. The medical doctors and dental surgeons also swore the Physician’s (Hippocratic) Oath administered by the Acting Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS), Prof. Yao Tettey, and Dean of the University of Ghana Dental School (UGDS), Prof. Grace Parkins.

A member of the University Council, Professor J. M. Hyde, who presided over the ceremony on behalf of Chairman of the Council, Justice Dr. Samuel K. Date-Bah, commended the CHS for training well-qualified specialists to provide “promotive, preventive and curative” health services for the country. He re-affirmed Council’s determination to collaborate with government and other stakeholders to make the relocation of the College from Korle-bu to Legon a reality.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, advised the graduands to let their conduct, performance and speech reflect the “greatness” of the Institution which trained them and urged them to work hard to help minimize diseases afflicting children, families and communities throughout the country.

Earlier in a welcome address, the Chairman of the CHS Council, Mr. Edward Effah, expressed gratitude to the President, Prof. J. E. A. Mills, for cutting the sod to mark the beginning of work for the construction of a new teaching hospital for the College of Health Sciences. He also appealed to government, foreign donors, corporate institutions and other stakeholders to help finance the project. Mr. Effah spoke of numerous benefits to be derived from the project, including a substantial increase in the numbers of health professionals trained for the country.

The Provost of the CHS, Professor Aaron Lawson, in his report expressed appreciation to the President and government for steps taken to secure funding and general support for the CHS project, highlighting the major role played by ithe Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Rojo Mettle-Nunoo. He was grateful to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aryeetey, for his determination to infuse seed money into the project and consequently relocate the CHS to the main University Campus at Legon.

The Special Guest of Honour, Professor E. Q. Archampong, a former Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School, in his address, noted that development in the advanced world is mostly driven by scientific research. He therefore called on stakeholders, including government, academia, research institutions, and the private sector and industry, to create a “national research fund” to finance relevant research activities and projects in the country. Professor Archampong called on the CHS to embark on an “aggressive marketing campaign” for funds from the private sector and funding agencies for its projects.

He reiterated the sentiments expressed by other speakers in commending the lecturers and administrators who had contributed to the training of the health professionals, and urged the graduands to put their expertise to the benefit of the larger society.

Mr. Benjamin S. Awuku who delivered the Valedictory Address on behalf of his colleagues, gave assurance of their commitment to combine their expertise with wisdom and humility to serve their clients.

Dr. Vera Mawusime Fosu who was adjudged the Best All-Round Student throughout the course won six (6) academic prizes. For her hard work, she received a prize sponsored by the Ghana Health Service presented by the immediate past Chairman of the College Council, Mr. Sam Okudzeto who was assisted by Prof. Afua Hesse of the Medical School.

Mr. K. Ameyaw-Korsah, a lecturer at the School of Nursing was the recipient of the Best Teacher Award whilst Mr. Thomas Q. Yartey was adjudged the Best Worker for the 2009/10 academic year.
