SRC Holds Maiden Community Excellence Awardspdf print preview print preview
 
The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana held its maiden UG Community Excellence Award at the Great Hall over the weekend. The guest of honour was Mr. C.C. Bruce, Managing Director of Enterprise Life Assurance. The event was also attended by university officials, among them, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Professor Kwesi Yankah. The Great Hall was filled with capacity with a stream of lecturers and students and other guests.

Mr. Benedict Sumah, Acting President of the Student Representative Council, in his welcome address, noted that the awards night, apart from showcasing students who had distinguished themselves in various categories, was also a demonstration to the world that a lot of positive things were taking place at the University. He said that a large number of students were committed to excellence and are poised to contribute towards the vision of attaining world-class status as a University.

In all there were fifteen categories of awards as well as the conferment of an honorary award. Miss Sarah Agyeiwah received the Outstanding Sports Personality whiles Fritz E. Hehetro won in the category of Most Talented in Creative Arts. The most impactful event was taken by Campus Praiz of the Assemblies of God Church Mission. The award for the most proactive International Student went to Careen D. Pessinaba from Togo; with the Outstanding Student Leader going to Philip Kankam.

The Award for the Student Entrepreneur of the year was received by Redeemer Lukutor; Student Activist of the year, William Andam; Student Organization of the year to Pax Romana Choir, the best student Innovation of the year to Kwabena E. Benin. The Political Science Students Association (POSSA) received the award for the Outstanding Department of the year, while Volta Hall received the award for the Best Hall of the Year.

The Knowing Africa Team was adjudged the Best University team. There were also awards in the category of Distinguished Lecturer of the Year which was taken up by Mr. Evans Aggrey-Darko of the Political Science Department. Mark Darkwah was adjudged Most Promising student of the year, while the Student Personality of the year went to Francis K. Ainoo.
The only honorary award was conferred upon Professor Kwesi Yankah, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), for his dedication to matters affecting students.

The ‘Ayeekoo Drummers’ entertained the audience with authentic traditional drumming and music as well as a poetry recital by Abeiku Okai. With captivating performances by Fritz E. Hehetro and several student artistes, the event was a night of spectacle, and colour, especially with the various designs and colours of traditional African attire on display.
