Press Release: Major Developments in the 2011/2012 Undergraduate Admissionspdf print preview print preview

The University of Ghana announces for the information of the general public, particularly prospective applicants to its undergraduate programmes in the 2011/2012 academic year, new developments in the admissions process.

The need for a revised process arose partly because the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), on which the University normally relies for most of its undergraduate admissions, was not written in June 2010. Secondly, there are a few changes regarding aggregates required for admission, for those presenting results from the WASSCE.

The public should therefore note the following major changes in this year’s admissions process for entry into bachelor degree programmes.

1) Candidates writing WASSCE in May/June 2011, have the opportunity to enter the University of Ghana this September. The one-year period of waiting to enter the University of Ghana is no longer necessary.

2) The University’s reopening schedule for fresh undergraduate students, which would normally have been in August, may be slightly shifted, to accommodate this new development. Details of the reopening schedule will be announced at the appropriate time.

3) Candidates hoping to rely on the results of this June’s WASSCE for entry to University of Ghana will apply for admission before they write their exams. In the on-line application, those candidates will not be required to state the results of their May/June 2011 examinations, but they need not worry. The University will obtain applicants’ June results directly from WAEC before processing applications for admission. On the other hand, applicants who already have previous SSSCE/WASSCE results will be required to indicate those on the application forms.

4) Furthermore, the calculation of aggregates for admissions, based on the results of the WASSCE (A1, B2, B3, C4, C5, C6, D7, E8, and F9) has been altered for greater simplicity and fairness. Candidates can themselves easily calculate their aggregates required for admission, by simply adding up the numbers written against the letters in their results. A1 means 1, B2 means 2, B3 means 3, C4 is 4, C5 is 5, C6 is 6, D7 is 7, E8 is 8 and F9 is 9. (The earlier mode of calculation in which C4, C5 and C6 were all equated to 4, and D7 and E8 were equated to 5 no longer applies).

5) The new mode of calculation is very user-friendly. The cut-off point as usual, will be determined by the University of Ghana depending on specific programmes applied for.

6) Additionally, the University of Ghana will only accept credits or grades from A1 to C6, for purposes of admission. D7 and E8 will no longer be accepted for admission.

7) This news release only highlights major changes in the admissions process. Details will be made available in the official announcement for the undergraduate admissions in the first week of March.

8) Online applications for undergraduate admission this year will be activated from the second week of March.

9) The University will additionally undertake a series of public outreach and orientation activities, to clear any puzzles and uncertainties about the admissions process before the deadline for application.

10) Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), or anticipated issues, will be made available at the University website
