| | Director of Global Agriculture of the Chicago Council for Global Affairs visits WACCI | | | | The Director of Global Agriculture of the Chicago Council for Global Affairs, Ms. Lisa Eakman, has visited the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) to familiarize herself with the WACCI PhD programme. She was accompanied by Mr. Jerry Hagstrom, Special Correspondent, Congress Daily, of the Atlantic Media Company and Ms. Mary Yaodze of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
The three-member delegation met with management and students at WACCI. Discussions centered on the promises and challenges of training a new generation of plant breeders for the Western and Central Africa sub-region. In his remarks, the Director of WACCI, Professor Eric Danquah reiterated the importance of US-Africa partnerships in the training of plant breeders in Africa. He acknowledged the publicity that the Chicago Council on Global affairs gave WACCI in their publication titled ‘Renewing American Leadership in the fight Against Global Hunger and Poverty’ and intimated that such publicity gave WACCI the visibility it needed to attract global attention.
Ms. Eakman commended AGRA for funding the WACCI project and emphasised rural participatory approaches in carrying out the project. She was particularly impressed with the number of female students enrolled on the programme.
Also present at the meeting were Professor Vernon Gracen, Associate Director, Dr. Naalamle Amissah, Programme Coordinator and other Senior Members at WACCI.
