Faculty Of Arts Holds 8th Annual Colloquiumpdf print preview print preview
 
The Faculty of Arts held its 8th Faculty Colloquium on April 14 and 15, 2010, at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana. This year’s event was organised under the theme: Communicating as a Nation: Back to the Future. Prof. Akosua Anyidoho, the keynote speaker, in her address focused on the neglect of local Ghanaian languages in national education, pointing out how various aspects of the Ghanaian culture, society and politics were adversely affected as a result of this negligence.

Demonstrating a steady increase over recent years in participation, this year’s event was well attended by faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and members of the public. About thirty two visitors from Nigeria made up of public officials and academics from Bayero University, Kano, were present at the opening ceremony which was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. C. N. B. Tagoe.

One of the high points of this year’s events was the plenary session with Prof. Femi Osofisan who expounded ideas on the importance of Recreating History through Theatre, and shared his experiences on gathering information for writing his plays. Another exciting moment was the plenary session with Mrs. Esi Sutherland-Addy, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of African Studies, in which she advocated that academics needed to feel “At Ease in our Skins,” by constantly bearing in mind and making an effort to work out the relationship between “The Academy and the Expressive Culture of Africa.” In all thirty four (34) papers were presented
