| | First School of Veterinary Medicine Launched in Legon |  | | | A School of Veterinary Medicine to develop human resources and capabilities in the area of veterinary practice, animal production and healthcare has been established at the University of Ghana. The new school is a constituent of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (CACS) and is the first of its kind in the country.
The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, in charge of live stock, Hon. Dr. Alfred Sugri Tia, who is also a Veterinarian, launched the University of Ghana School of Veterinary Medicine (UGSVM). He presented a double cabin pick-up vehicle from the Ministry to the School and expressed their determination to further assist the School to overcome its challenges.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. C. N. B. Tagoe, traced the efforts to establish the School to the 1980s, which after a lull, were renewed in 2005. He thanked the various individuals and groups, including the Veterinary Association of Ghana, for their contribution to the establishment of the School.
The Chairperson for the ceremony, Mr. John Klinogo, who is also the Chairman of Council of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (CACS), was delighted that veterinary surgeons would now be trained locally and that research in the area of Veterinary Medicine will receive a boost.
The Provost of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (CACS), Prof. B.K. Ahunu, stated that the School has received approval from all authorized statutory bodies. He thanked those who graced the occasion, including the Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Dr. Hanna Bissiu, Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Dr. Nii Quaye-Kumah, and Chairman of the Veterinary Council of Ghana, Dr. K. O. Gyening.
Various donations were received after an appeal for support to procure textbooks and other equipment for the School was launched by Dr. Irene Egyir, a lecturer at the College. Donors included Mr. Klinogo, Dr. Irene Egyir, Rev. Dr. Amaning Kwarteng, Rev. Sam Korankye-Ankrah, Frankatson Ltd., Aglow Farms Ltd., and the Cattle Farmers Association of Ghana.
