Tagoe in his address to Congregation touched on areas of governance, government and private support to the university, admissions, distance learning, academic quality assurance, ICT developments, security matters, among others. On distance learning, the Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the Centre for Distance Education had received over 2,000 applications and will, later this month, admit students to degree programmes for the 2007/8 academic year, adding that with the encouraging response, it will be possible to offer university education to a large number of students who would otherwise not have been able to study in situ. |
Prof. Tagoe used the occasion to catalogue a number of initiatives that have also been made on the academic front meant to diversify the university’s course offerings in order to meet the demands of higher education and human resource needs of the country. These are, Master of Philosophy programmes in Nuclear and Allied Sciences, and plans to establish Schools of Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine, which he mentioned were at the stage of accreditation processes. The Vice-Chancellor announced to Congregation, the University’s landmark Anniversary in 2008, under the theme, “Legon: Charting a New Course for Tomorrow.” He said the Planning Committee for the 60th Anniversary celebrations had already come up with a year long programme running from November 2007 to August 2008, the month in which the University was chartered.
The Guest of Honour, Prof. Mrs. Florence Dolphyne, a former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University stressed the need for the new graduates and especially to those who were entering the world of work for the first time, to use the National Service period to contribute their quota to national development and also to see postings to the rural areas as an opportunity to discover the country.
She noted that with the 21st century being an age for science and technology, the graduands, especially those in the sciences ought to embark on post-graduate training and return to their alma mater to teach to help fast-track the nation’s development, especially in this age of science and technology.

She challenged her colleagues to “keep their heads high in society” and give back to the society that had shaped them.
The Chairman of Council in dissolving Congregation delivered a very powerful address by invoking the alma mater’s blessings on all the graduands. He called on them not only to remember the university’s motto, Integri Procedamus, (rendered artistically, Let us proceed with integrity) but also “to internalize all those values and march forth into the world and make a success of this business of life that could sometimes by tryingly difficult”.
