Minister for Information and National Orientation visits Radio Universpdf print preview print preview
 
As part of her recent “Media Walk” on assumption of duty, the Minister for Information and National Orientation, Mrs Oboshie Sai-Cofie has paid an official visit to Radio Univers. She was accompanied by her Deputy, Mr. Frank Agyekum and the Government Spokesperson on Infrastructure, Ms. Catherine Afeku.

They were conducted round the studios of Radio Univers by the Station Manager, Mr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh.

Mrs. Sai-Cofie said the objective of the media walks, was to pull closer to media community, who were the key partners of the Ministry, and also visit some of the social centres close to the media houses. She added that her visit would afford her the opportunity to examine some of the constraints and challenges faced by the media houses, and determine how best to help the media fulfil their mandate of informing the Ghanaian public accurately and timely.

Mr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh gave a brief history about the Station, which he said begun operating in the latter part of 1994 as “Voice of Legon” on frequency modulation of 99.7. He said Radio Univers which was initially run by the Students Representative Council and the School of Communication Studies, is now under the Public Affairs Directorate of the University. The Station Manager added that being an important vehicle for disseminating information to students of the University each student contributes GH¢2 towards the sustenance of the Station. He explained that one of the object of Radio Univers was to uphold the principles of academic and intellectual freedom.

In his remarks, the Deputy Minister mentioned that the visit and indeed the media walks were not to be seen as propaganda tools but a means of informing the entire nation about government’s policies and programmes.

Among those who received the Minister and her team were the Chairperson of the Management Board of Radio Univers, Dr. Akosua Perbi, the Head of the Akan Programme of Radio Univers and a member of the Management Board, Dr. Ohene Agyekum, the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella Amoa as well as a large number of students and volunteers of Radio Univers.
