| | University of Ghana holds Congregation |  | | | A total of 1,988 students from six faculties have graduated from the University and were presented at the November, 2008 Congregation recently. The Faculties are Engineering Science, Law, Science, the Business School, the School of Research and Graduate Studies, and the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences.
The graduands consisted of 161 diplomates, 1,395 undergraduates, and 435 post-graduates. The post-graduates included 12 doctoral graduates from the Departments of Agricultural Engineering, Botany, Food Science, Georgraphy and Resource Development, Microbiology, Psychology, Statistics and Zoology.
Of the undergraduates, 160 (11.5%) received First Class degrees, whilst 14 (9.2 %) diplomates had distinction.
Among those presented were the first batch of graduands from the Faculty of Engineering Sciences drawn from the Departments of Food Process Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Agricultural Engineering.
In addition, graduands from three institutions affiliated to the University, the Institute of Professional Studies, Institute of Accountancy Training, and the Islamic University College were also among those who were presented at the Congregation ceremony.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the University Council, Mr. Anthony Oteng-Gyasi, described the year 2008 as a landmark year. He mentioned that, in addition to the attainment of 60 years, the University during this year, invested His Excellency Kofi Annan as Chancellor, and also graduated its first cohort of engineers.
Delivering his address to Congregation, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor C.N.B. Tagoe first of all congratulated the graduands and urged them to stand out among their peers in their future endeavours. He thanked the Government and the GETFund for the subvention and funding received for the University's activities.
The Vice-Chancellor was full of appreciation to the President, His Excellency John Adjekum Kufour, for allocating to the University, a GH¢60 million package over a 10-year period, at the Special Congregation He mentioned

that upon the suggestion made by the President, a Committee has been tasked to work towards the establishment of the Institute for the Study of the Environment and Sanitation Sciences.

Prof. Tagoe catalogued numerous infrastructural projects being undertaken by the University to improve teaching and learning. These include lecture halls, a multi-purpose facility for the School of Performing Arts, a Central Science Laboratory, buildings for the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and School of Allied Health Sciences, and student hostels.
He acknowledged various organizations which assisted the Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO), enabling the SFAO to increase its assistance to needy students by 42% in the last academic year. They included the Vine Group USA Inc, Ghana Reinsurance Company Ltd, All Nations Education USA, and the Lebanese Women's Association. Prof. Tagoe also commended the Ghana Society of the Blind for donating 16 Sight Savers Dolphin Pens, valued at US$7,200, to assist blind or visually-impaired students to work with computers. He also thanked the Japanese Government for donating a scanning electron microscope worth over US$400,000 to the Zoology Department. |
The Vice-Chancellor said the Chinese Government had offered a concessionary loan of US$8.2 million for the improvement of the University's ICT infrastructure, to facilitate Distance Education programmes.
On new programmes introduced at the University, the Vice-Chancellor mentioned the Bachelor of Pharmacy course, to which he said, 34 students had been admitted.
Prof. Tagoe acknowledged the role of the University Council and other boards and committees in the smooth running of the University.
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Lawrence Adu Mante, Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), said his Bank was open to distinguished graduands for their careers, as well as industrial attachment for students or service personnel. He congratulated the founders of the University for their foresight, and the University for the achievements over 60 years. While calling on alumni of the University to display qualities of responsibility and humility in their communities, Mr. Adu-Mante advised graduands to be focused whilst pursuing their objectives, and also to preach peace.
Mr. Adu-Mante said the GCB had so far donated GH¢1,264,978 to construct a 2,000-seater lecture hall complex for the University. On behalf of the Ghana Commercial Bank, Mr. Adu-Mante presented a cheque of GH¢5,000 to the Needy Bright Students' Fund.
Ms. Anna Abrafi Koduah, a graduand from the Department of Food Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Sciences delivered the Valedictory Address on behalf of graduands. She bemoaned the absence or insufficiency of lecture halls, laboratory equipment, libraries and reading rooms, and residential accommodation facilities, which she noted threatened their studies. She however expressed appreciation to the University for setting up the Faculty of Engineering Sciences in line with current world trends, and also to faculty for sustaining the University's goal.
