| | Legon Hall Launches 60th Anniversary Celebrations | | | | Legon Hall, the premier hall of student residence of the University of Ghana has launched its 60th anniversary under the theme, “Legon Hall at 60: Contribution to National Development”.

Professor David Atta-Peters, Hall Master of Legon Hall
In an address to launch the 60th anniversary celebrations, the Hall Master of Legon Hall, Professor David Atta-Peters noted that the celebration was very significant because it would give members of the Hall the opportunity to reflect on their past activities, challenges and the way forward. He said the hall has produced many renowned personalities who have contributed immensely towards the development of Ghana and the world at large. Prominent among these illustrious alumni are the late President of Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, for whom a minute silence was observed. He also mentioned Dr. Edward Mahama, former flag bearer of the Peoples National Convention, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party as alumni of the Hall.
Professor Atta-Peters also lauded personalities such as Honourable J.H. Mensah, a former member of Ghana’s Parliament, Emeritus Professor E. Laing, an Emeritus Professor of Botany, Ambassador E.M. Debrah, a retired Diplomat, Professor Reginald Amonoo, former President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Professor Adzei Bekoe, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University who were among the first junior members of the Hall.He said in 1951 the pioneering class volunteered to come into residence in Legon Hall even though at that time, there were no communal facilities of any kind. He noted that by September 1952, the first batch of 112 male undergraduates were accepted into residence, adding that when the female population in the University increased during the 1992/93 academic year, the Hall admitted its first batch of female students.
The Hall Master noted that over the years, facilities in the hall have deteriorated due to the increase in the number of students which is currently about 1,800. He said as a result of the decongestion exercise carried out in all traditional halls of residence in the University, there are now three students per room in the main hall, bringing the current number of resident students to 1,206. He opined that this has helped improve sanitation as well as create a congenial atmosphere for learning in the Hall. Prof Atta Peters said there is still the need to increase water supply by providing more water resources. He extended a hand of invitation to all alumni of the premier hall to participate fully in the anniversary celebration.
Registrar, Mr. J. M. Budu, making brief remarks
In brief remarks, the Registrar, Mr. J. M. Budu, an alumnus, who was a student of the Hall between 1973 and 1976, said he saw the anniversary celebration as an opportunity to reconnect with his Hall. He emphasised that the Hall has done well over the past 60 years by producing professionals for the state both in the public and educational sectors. He challenged all especially students of the hall to learn from alumni of the hall and do better.
Chairman of the University of Ghana Alumni Association, Mr. KwesiYankey
The Chairman of the University of Ghana Alumni Association, Mr. Paa Kwesi Yankey said the association intends to support as many of the activities of the celebration as possible. He mentioned in particular that the association would sponsor the Hall’s quiz programme by awarding cash prizes to the first three winners. This sponsorship package he said is to enable the Hall better prepare to win the forthcoming SRC quiz competition. He said the Alumni Association also intends to renovate the Hall’s tutorial reading room to make it more conducive for studies.
Activities lined up for the 60th anniversary celebration include a public lecture, a ladies and gentlemen’s day, seminars, Legon Hall alumni home-coming, a fundraising dinner dance and awards night, and a thanksgiving service.
Present at the function were past and present Hall Masters and Tutors of the Hall, Alumni, fellows, Hall authorities from other halls as well as Junior members of the Hall.
