| | Open Day Celebration Of The Forest And Horticultural Crops Research Centre (FOHCREC)Kade on June 29, 2012 |  | | | The Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre-Kade (FOHCREC) is organizing its 2nd Open-day Session under the theme: “SHOWCASING RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIES AND INNOVATIONS FOR INCREASED AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY, INCOME AND SUSTAINED FOOD SECURITY”.
This open-day will offer farmers and associated stakeholders the opportunity to get to know current crop varieties, new extension techniques and learn new methods for cost-effective farm management. The open day will also provide a grand platform for networking between consumers, farmers, industry players, research and academics.
The Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre (FOHCREC) - Kade is one of the three research centers of the Institute of Agricultural Research, College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, University of Ghana, Legon. The Centre was established in 1957 with a grant from the Cocoa Marketing Board, and covers a total area of 1090 hectares.
The mission of the Centre is to develop sustainable agricultural production systems suitable for the humid tropical environment, through research, training and extension activities. In order to meet its mission the Centre has a long term vision of developing into a reputable regional/world research Centre, leading in humid tropical and horticultural research, teaching and extension, and suitable agrosilvipastoral systems with emphasis on forest-based crops and livestock. With this in mind the Centre has set out the following objectives:
i. Develop adaptable crop varieties for release to farmers through research;
ii. Provide facilities for human resource development (capacity building for farmers, Ministry of Agriculture staff, students, middle level manpower, stakeholders in the horticultural and other Agricultural industries);
iii. Develop appropriate pests and diseases management practices for the crops under study;
iv. Develop improved technologies for the production of planting materials (e.g. plantain, cocoyam, avocado, citrus, mango, vegetable crops, etc.);
v. Establish close collaborative relationships with national and international institutions, NGOs and industries with similar objectives;
vi. Develop efficient research information transfer services including extension and consultancy services;
vii. Develop post-harvest technology for the crops under study (e.g. Citrus, avocado, rice, mango);
viii. Establish large model commercial plantations (e.g. Citrus, oil palm, rubber);
ix. Develop Museum of forest crop varieties, aquaculture, wildlife, Bird watching, boating for Eco-tourism activities;
The Centre is equipped with world class scientists who research in areas such as Production and Environmental Management, Crop Improvement and Conservation, Post Harvest Technology, Crop Protection, Agribusiness and Systems Innovation, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Integrated Crops and Animals Farming Systems. Currently the crops under study include vegetable crops (pepper, tomato, garden eggs, okra, squash/marrow etc), citrus, avocado, mango, root and tuber crops, oil palm, rubber, rice, medicinal and aromatic plants, etc.
