| | 754 Graduate from College of Health Sciences |  | | | Seven hundred and fifty-four students have graduated with various degrees and certificates from the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana at a colourful ceremony at the University’s Athletic Oval over the weekend.
Of the number, 147 and 29 others were inducted as doctors and dental surgeons respectively after they had taken the Hippocratic Oath. Other graduands were from the School of Nursing, Public Health and Allied Health Sciences.
The ceremony which was attended by University officials, members of the University and College Council was declared duly constituted by the Chairman of Council, His Lordship Justice Dr. S.K. Date-Bah.
In his address, Professor Aaron L. Lawson said the College continued to make progress in the area of academic programmes and infrastructural development, adding that following the sod-cutting ceremony by President J.E.A. Mills in March, 2011 for the College's projects, Parliament approved a loan of US$359 million for the construction of a new 600-bed teaching hospital for the college at Legon. On the College's relationship with international organisations, the Provost said the school continued to make progress in the development of partnerships with international institutions for research and training.
Dr Adrian Nii Odoi Oddoye, an alumnus of the University of Ghana Medical School was the Special Guest of Honour. In his address, Dr. Oddoye, who is the Medical Director of Akai House Clinic, said the College had become a great asset to the nation. He pro¬posed that the College operates as a business entity to ensure its financial sustainability and operational efficiency. He further called for collaborative partnership between the College and the private sector for partnership for mutual benefit. Dr. Oddoye, further urged the College to consider providing consultancy services to the private health facilities for them to keep abreast of modem trends and practice.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, in his congratulatory message to the graduands, also called on all the units of the College to endeavour to implement the strategic plan of the College.
Dr. Rita Adorkor Akwei delivered the Valedictory Address. There were special awards to deserving graduands from the Dental School, Medical School, School of Public Health and the School of Nursing, in addition to graduands who had pursued programmes in the BSc, Medical Sciences, Laboratory Sciences, Physiotherapy, Radiography programmes.
