| | UG To Receive More Support for the Study of Chinese |  | | | The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Gong Jianzhong has called on the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey. Their Discussions centered on enhancing existing relations between China and the University of Ghana, which both parties noted was crucial. The Ambassador was accompanied by a delegation from the Chinese Embassy.
His Excellency Gong Jianzhong used the opportunity to announce an Ambassador Scholarship Programme for students who excel in the study of the Chinese language. He said from September 2012, the Embassy intends to award scholarships to three top students from the Chinese Section of the Department of Modern Languages. He mentioned that each of the awardees will receive a cash prize of 1,500 US dollars, adding that the Chinese Embassy is ready and willing to engage further with the University to formulate a detailed plan concerning the Scholarship programme. He was hopeful that the package will encourage young Ghanaian students to learn and understand not only the Chinese language but culture as well.
Ambassador Gong Jianzhong further informed the Vice-Chancellor that the Embassy has chosen the University of Ghana to benefit from a Chinese company’s support to tertiary institutions in the country by establishing and equipping computer centres in those institutions before the end of this year. The objective of this initiative, he said was to enhance ICT learning in the country.
He also extended an invitation to officials of the University to participate in some impending programmes to be held in China within the next couple of months.
In brief remarks, Professor Wang Qingyun of the Economic and Commercial Counsellor’s Office at the Chinese Embassy said the Embassy was ready to assist the University get more lecturers from Universities in China to assist the Chinese section in teaching Linguistics, Literature and Language. This arrangement, she said could start from the 2012/2013 academic year.
In response, Prof. Aryeetey lauded the idea of the Scholarship Programme, the establishment of the ICT Centre, and other collaborative initiatives being spearheaded by the Ambassador. He thanked the Ambassador for choosing the University of Ghana to benefit from the ICT programme.
The Vice-Chancellor said the University is interested in student exchange programmes where beneficiary students could acquaint themselves with the Chinese language and culture. He assured the delegation of going through the due process of the University with respect to the proposals made and thanked the Ambassador and his delegation for the visit.
