| | Dr. Zedillo Delivers 2012 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures |  | | | Former President of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo, 2012 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lecturer, has began a three-day lecture series in the Great Hall of the University of Ghana on the theme: Globalization and Governance: What does the Future Hold?
Delivering to a packed audience on the first day of the lecture, Dr. Zedillo spoke on the topic: Latin America’s Development Experience and Challenges: Any Relevance for African Countries? The first day session was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey.
He pointed out in the lecture, that developing countries ought to be aware of time-tested principles that have shaped economic growth, and argued for the strengthening of governance institutions in developing countries which included focussing on human development, internal savings and investments, dealing with the challenges of institutions that prevented competition, innovation as well as the creation of new businesses. He said that these initiatives were no doubt synonymous with the rule of law.
The second in the series of the lectures was on the topic: The Unequal Race between Globalization and Governance: Recent History and Speculations about the Future (Part 1). This session was chaired by the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. C.N.B. Tagoe.
Dr. Zedillo delivers the last lecture on March 9, 2012 at 5.00 p.m. in the Great Hall with the Part 2 of the topic: Recent History and Speculations about the Future. This session will be chaired by the Chairman of the University of Ghana Council, His Lordship Justice Dr. S.Kofi Date-Bah.
This will be immediately followed by a Special Congregation during which an Honorary Degree will be conferred on Dr. Ernesto Zedillo.
Ernesto Zedillo, economist and politician, is currently Director of the Center for the Study of Globalization at Yale University. He is a Professor in the Field of International Economics and Politics; Professor of International and Area Studies; and Professor Adjunct of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University.
He earned his Bachelor's degree from the School of Economics of the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico and his M.A. and Ph.D. at Yale University. He was a Professor at the National Polytechnic Institute and El Colegio de Mexico. From 1978-87 he was with the Central Bank of Mexico; from 1987-88 he served the National Government of Mexico as Undersecretary of Budget; from 1988-1992 as Secretary of Economic Programming and Budget Education; and was appointed Secretary of Education in 1992.
Ernesto Zedillo served as President of Mexico from 1994-2000. Since leaving office in 2000, Ernesto Zedillo has been a leading voice on globalization, especially its impact on relations between developed and developing nations.
The Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial lecture series was instituted in 1957 to commemorate the contribution made to the founding of Achimota College and the advancement of education, particularly higher education, in Ghana. The lectures, instituted in honour of James Kwegyir Aggrey, Alexander G. Fraser and Gordon Guggisberg have become a great event to which the Ghanaian public looks forward to. It is indeed the most prestigious lecture series and the high-point of the intellectual calendar of the country.
