| | UG In Gargantuan Leap On Academic Web Rankings | | | | With web rankings out for 2012, the University of Ghana continues to soar on the charts. The University of Ghana placed 16th on the chart of the “Top 100 Universities and Colleges in Africa” on the 4ICU web rankings.
The 4ICU is a leading international higher education research organization that undertakes reviews and ranks over 11,000 universities worldwide based on the popularity and usage of their websites. Although the 4ICU chart is not an academic ranking, in that it does not measure universities or their programmes by quality of education and service, it serves as a useful tool of measurement, thereby assisting institutions to monitor their popularity.
With respect to academic rankings, over the last six years, the University of Ghana has made a gargantuan leap from the 49th position in 2006 to placing 19th in 2012 on the Webometrics Ranking Web of World Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The webometrics by the Cybermetrics Lab in Spain is a global web ranking that is well regarded and popular as it covers over 20,000 institutions world-wide.
Other academic rankings include the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
The University of Ghana began to see results when units which were not on the main university website were able to join following the improved and enhanced ICT platform. Says Prof. John Gyapong, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development, “…. most of the publications from the Medical School, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the School of Public Health are not captured in SCOPUS as UG publications”. A way out, he argued would be to advise faculty on a standard way of referencing their research material in order to improve the University of Ghana’s web presence. Others have also stressed on the importance of faculty populating their web pages, essentially as they relate to research data.
All said and done, one thing remains clear – a wish of majority, if not all members of the university community. Another gargantuan leap to the top 10 in 2013!
