Establishment and Achievements

The UGMS holds a significant historical place as the first Medical School to be established by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of the Republic of Ghana in 1962. It was quite a daunting task but with the able support of eminent visionaries like the late Prof. C. O. Easmon and others, the School sailed through the difficulties and produced the first batch of locally trained doctors in 1969.

Over this period, the UGMS has produced a total of 4,510 Medical Doctors. The School and its products rapidly established a prestigious brand and good reputation both locally and internationally. The University of Medical School has contributed immensely to the establishment of the University of Ghana Dental School, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, the School of Public Health and the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences and lastly the University of Ghana School of Pharmacy. The School also helped to establish the KNUST School of Medicine & Dentistry, University for Development Studies School of Medicine and Health Sciences.  University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences, the University of Health and Allied Sciences School of Medicine and the two private Medical Schools: Accra College of Medicine and Family Health Medical School.
