D.K. Asiedu [BSc (Ghana), MSc, PhD (Okayama)]

Daniel Asiedu is a Professor of Geology at the Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana. He is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of sedimentary geology. He is best known for using petrographic, geochemical and isotopic techniques to constrain the provenance of sedimentary rocks. He has 20 years’ university teaching and research experience and has undertaken several extension activities mostly in the areas of education, research and consultancy services. He holds a BSc (Ghana) degree in Geology with Mathematics, an MSc (Okayama) degree in Geology, and a PhD (Okayama) degree in Geology. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Offshore Prospecting (Japan).

He was appointed to the position of a Lecturer at the Department of Geology (now Earth Science), University of Ghana, in 1998, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2001, Associate Professor in 2006, and to Full Professor in 2010. He has also worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Munich in Germany (2002 to 2003) and at Okayama University in Japan (2003 to 2005). Before joining the University of Ghana he worked with the Ghana Geological Survey Department, from 1988 to 1998, as a Geologist.

Professor Asiedu has taught several courses (largely in the areas of sedimentary geology and geochemistry) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has supervised over 100 undergraduate (BSc) and over 60 postgraduate students’ research projects in the University of Ghana. His current research activities focus on sedimentology, and petrology and geochemistry of sedimentary rocks of Ghana.

He is a Fellow of the following professional associations: Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Geological Society of London, and the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists. He is also a Member of the following professional associations: Geological Society of America (GSA), Geological Society of Africa (GSAf), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), Society for Sedimentary Geologists (SEPM), Ghana Science Association, and Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

In recognition of his commitment to academic, research and administrative excellence, he has won several awards/fellowships, notably, Meritorious Award (2013; 2018), awarded by Department of Earth Science, Merit Award and Citation (2010), awarded by Geology Students’ Association of the University of Ghana (GEOLSA), JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2003–2005), awarded by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship (2002–2003), awarded by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
