Insight

Carnegie Corporation of New York is a foundation established by the late Andrew Carnegie that seeks to “promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding” and to promote international peace.

Philanthropic efforts were initially targeted towards the United States of America but in recent years have included Commonwealth members and Sub-Saharan Africa. Programs and initiatives have been instituted to fulfil the vision of improvement in educational policies and curriculums, among others.

One of such programmes is the “Excellence in Postgraduate Research, Training and Retention” Programme which seeks to strengthen postgraduate research programmes, to build and encourage academic collaborations with Sub-Saharan Africa and to as well as to advance university and academic leadership and policies.”

Similar modules of this project are being run in Uganda, South Africa and in Ghana. In Ghana, the project is located at the University of Ghana under the name, “Next Generation of Academics in Africa: Enhancing the University of Ghana’s Capacity to Deliver Post-graduate Research and Training.”
