OVERVIEW

The Department of Animal Science was established in 1961 to produce personnel equipped with the requisite skills and a good understanding of the basic principles of animal production with the view to increase the production of meat and other animal products and subsequently reduce the national problem of malnutrition. It has since its inception evolved to become a fully fledged Department within the College of Agriculture & Consumer Sciences.

Vision

To build a centre of excellence that trains Livestock Scientists and Animal  Husbandry Development Officers with thorough knowledge of the animal production sector of the Ghanaian economy and the skills to enhance animal productivity; continuously improve the capacity of the private sector in meeting the demands of the growing market for quality meat and other products as well as execute mission-oriented and demand-driven research for knowledge acquisition while maintaining dynamic outreach programmes for the development of Ghana's agriculture.

Mission

To train livestock scientists and animal agriculturists to enhance animal productivity and to continually execute mission-oriented, cutting-edge research for knowledge acquisition while maintaining dynamic outreach programmes for the development of Ghana's agriculture.






Programmes: The Department offers a wide range of courses at the Diploma, Undergraduate and Graduate levels. From 2013/2014 academic year, undergraduate students in Animal Science will have an additional option of specializing in Aquaculture. At the graduate level the main areas of specialization are:
