Livestock and Poultry Research Centre (LIPREC), Legon

Overview:

The Livestock and Poultry Research Centre, Legon (LIPREC, Legon) was established in 1953 and is approximately 15 kilometres from the main University campus at Legon. It covers an area 439.54 hectares and focuses on livestock and poultry research and production (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, guinea fowls and ostrich) and integration of crops for the development of ecologically sustainable production packages for farmers.

Vision:  A centre of excellence for research and training of students, agricultural professionals and farmers to solve problems of livestock and poultry production.

Mission: To provide an excellent environment for the conduction of research into livestock and poultry for the advancement of Ghana's agriculture and to offer practical training to students, agricultural professionals and farmers for cost-effective and ecologically sustainable livestock production

Objectives are to:
  • carry out research into all aspects of domestic livestock and poultry production.
  • provide livestock management and improvement information to farmers and stakeholders.
  • provide facilities for student instruction.
  • establish close collaborative relationships with national and international institutions, NGOs and industries with similar objectives.
  • develop efficient research information transfer services including extension and consultancy services.

The Centre is a huge resource for the practical training of Faculty, Staff, Graduate and Undergraduate students of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences in all aspects of animal production and research.  It offers short courses for relevant stakeholders and is the origin of the Leventis Foundation Farmers Training Programme, which trains young and would-be framers - a direct and relevant extension service.
The areas of research focus of the Centre are:

1)    Animal Improvement and Production
2)    Animal Nutrition and Forages
3)    Animal Health
4)    Animal Traction
5)    Processing
6)    Agribusiness and Systems Innovation

LIPREC currently has five competent Research Fellows, Research Assistants and supporting staff that collaborate with themselves and researchers from national and international institutions to conduct research in varied areas of livestock and poultry production, processing and health. The Centre therefore has vacancies for Research fellows in all areas of its research focus.
