Newly Appointed Heads of Departments Undergo Orientation

The Human Resource and Organizational Development Directorate (HRODD) in collaboration with the Academic Quality Assurance Unit (AQAU) has organized a two-day orientation programme for newly appointed Heads of Department/Unit. The program was held at the Great Hall from September 25-26, 2018.

Speaking on the Roles and Responsibilities of a Head of Department, the Pro-Vice Chancellor [ASA], Prof. Kwame Offei urged all Heads to adopt proper planning, prudent financial management as well as effective management of academic and administrative staff in their respective Departments. This he said will enable their smooth operation.  

Prof. Dan Ofori, Acting Director of the Academic Quality Assurance Unit (AQAU) spoke on the Role of Heads of Department in the Quality Assurance Processes at UG. He noted that as the Chief Quality Officers of their departments and units, Heads must comply with both internal and external quality assurance procedures including: ensuring punctuality of lecturers, preparation of course syllabi, ensuring that departments regularly review their academic programmes as well as keeping to their programme accreditation schedule.

The Registrar of the University, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia gave a detailed presentation on Administrative Procedures and Structures at the University.

Dr. Awo Asiedu, Coordinator, Office of Students with Special Needs (OSSN), spoke on Managing Students with Special Needs at the Departmental Level. According to her, the objective of the office is to ensure that students with special needs and chronic conditions have equal access to facilities on campus. She urged all Heads of Department to identify such students and ensure that their needs are met by working together with the OSSN.

Mr. Daniel Ameyaw, an Assistant Registrar at the AQAU indicated that the purpose of the orientation was to equip the Heads with necessary skills that will enable them to effectively manage the administrative process at their Departments/Units in order to enhance students’ educational experiences.

Other presentations were also made by Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah (Provost, College of Humanities), Prof. Dan Ofori (Ag. Director, AQUA), Prof. S. Sefa-Dedeh (School of Engineering), Mr. Kwasi Odame (Head, IMT, Finance Directorate), Mr. Lucas Chigabatia (CITO, UGCS), Mrs. Christy Badu (Ag. Director, Academic Affairs), Mrs. Afua Yeboah (Senior Assistant Registrar, ORID) and Dr. Kweku Ainuson.

Approximately 40 Heads of various units participated in the orientation programme.
