Community-based person-Centred enhanced care for People Living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana (ExtraCECI)

School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Ghana

Research Project Summary

Community-based approaches in tackling HIV/AIDS have prospects of keeping People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) healthy and alive through the delivery of person-centered and holistic care. Task-shifting and decentralising HIV services to community settings in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has proven to be cost-effective.

The use of person-centred assessment and care delivered by trained healthcare professionals (HCP) has demonstrated a positive effect on self-reported mental health-related QoL and psychosocial well-being. ExtraCECI project aims to improve the quality of life and person-centred outcomes for PLWHA in Ghana.

This is a cluster randomised control trial that will target both cluster and individual participants. It will include (i) a training programme for HCP on person-centred communication, (ii) a holistic assessment of PLWHA’s symptoms and concerns in the domains of physical, psychological, social, and spiritual wellbeing using a structured tool, (iii) a care plan to facilitate collaborative care planning and delivery, (iv) mentorship for HCP and fidelity monitoring.

The ‘Extra’ component for PLWHA is (v) training/sensitising PLWHA to engage, participate and contribute to their care decisions.

DEADLINE : MARCH 30, 2024

Thank you.

Call for Papers - Broadcasting Colonialism: Sight, Sound and Media Technologies in the Colonial World

Starting February 13, 2024 - Ending February 13, 2025

Call for Papers

Broadcasting Colonialism: Sight, Sound and Media Technologies in the Colonial World

African Studies Centre and Oxford Centre for Global History, University of Oxford

Department of Communication Studies, University of Ghana

Department of Communication and Media Studies, University of Johannesburg

Venue: Online and Nissan Lecture Theatre, St Antony’s College, Oxford

Dates: 16-17th May, 2024

Organiser: Peter Brooke (peter.brooke@africa.ox.ac.uk)

Conference Theme

The conference invites research on the history of radio, television, film and recorded sound in a colonial context. Scholarship on colonial newspapers is now a well-established field but historians have given less attention to broadcast media due, not least, to the methodological challenges of using audio and visual archives. Colonial officials were fascinated by the power of broadcasting as a tool of political control and its potential to project a high-tech vision of colonial rule as modern and permanent. Paradoxically, this often went hand-in-hand with an ethnographic impetus to record, curate and promote ‘traditional’ music and stories. But broadcast media proved unreliable servants of colonial rule thanks to the efforts of subversive voices from within the colonial media machine and, from without, the cross-border flow of contraband records, banned film reels and ‘guerrilla radio’ stations (Lekgoathi et al, 2020). In some localities broadcast media served as much to undermine as to prolong empire.

The scope of the conference is global and invites research on any part of the colonial world defined in the broadest sense, including the European empires, China, Japan and Russia, and settler-colonial societies such as USA. Papers may consider the colonial period itself, the

question of legacy in the post-independence era or coverage of the colonial past in contemporary media. Participants are welcome to interpret the subject of the conference as they wish but the following sub-themes may serve as useful starting points:

· Archives and methodologies.

· Modernity, technology and the ‘colonial sublime’ (Larkin, 2015).

· The state, political control and ‘soft power’.

· Subversive voices, race, gender and liberation.

· Creators and mediators: broadcasters, producers, directors, actors.

· Audiences: local, national and trans-national.

· Music, ethnography and identity.

· Cultural production, drama and language.

· Corporate ownership and ‘control patterns’ (Nyamnjoh, 2005).

Format:

Participants are invited to present papers of 20 minutes, which will be grouped into panels of 3-4 papers and followed by a discussion. The keynote lecture will be held at 5 PM on 16th May. The conference will include a film presentation and discussion session on 17th May.

Submissions:

Please send the following to Brenda McCollum at events@africa.ox.ac.uk by April 2nd 2024:

· Title.

· Abstract of max. 300 words.

· Biography of max. 100 words.

· Specify whether you would prefer to present online or in Oxford.

· Panel proposals are also welcome. For more details please see: https://www.africanstudies.ox.ac.uk/

Press Statement: Incidence of Assault on the University Campus

Starting January 16, 2024 - Ending January 16, 2025

January 16, 2024

PRESS STATEMENT: INCIDENCE OF ASSAULT ON THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

The Management of the University of Ghana has learned with concern that a young man was assaulted around the southern part of the University’s Legon campus. The attack was videoed and widely shared on social media.

Preliminary information from the University’s Security Services Unit uncovers the following:

  • A young man dressed like a female was seen in the Okponglo area, seeking accommodation and was accommodated by some women in the area.
  • During the night, his true identity was revealed, leading to physical assault by the women who accommodated him.
  • A refuse collector, assuming the young man to be a woman, intervened and took him to a refuse collection site behind Dr. Hilla Limann Hall.
  • Realising the true gender the following morning, the refuse collector also assaulted the young man, instructing him to leave the area.
  • The Security Personnel were alerted by University of Ghana students to intervene.
  • Some of the students who watched the scene took videos.
  • The University Security Services Unit handed both the young man and the refuse collector (both of whom are not students of the University) over to the Legon Police for investigation.

The University of Ghana strongly denounces the assault and denigration perpetrated by the persons seen in the videos posted on social media on the victim, and strongly condemns such acts of lawlessness.  The University of Ghana would like to affirm its commitment  to the safety, dignity and inclusivity of all persons, as stated in its Statutes as follows:

42.(1) Without prejudice to the application of the national laws by the University, no member of the University shall:

(e) engage in a course of vexatious conduct that is directed at one or more specific individuals, and

  1. that is based on the race, ancestry, place of birth, origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, sex, sexual orientation, creed, age, marital status, family status, disability, receipt of public assistance or record of offences of that individual or those individuals.

Management takes its commitment to the enforcement of the rules and regulations governing the University seriously, and any member of the University community identified to be involved in this cruel incident will be appropriately sanctioned.

Management assures the public that the University will continue to work with the Ghana Police Service for a thorough investigation into the matter and to ensure the safety of all members of the University community as well as visitors to our campuses.

Beware of Accommodation Scam

Starting January 14, 2024 - Ending January 14, 2025

BEWARE OF ACCOMMODATION SCAM

The University has received information that some unscrupulous persons are asking non-resident students to apply for accommodation in traditional halls of residence through a particular e-mail address and to make payment through a mobile money number (0533353233).

Please note that this is a scam. Allocation of rooms was done through the Random Bed Allocation and that process has ended.

Students who were not able to secure accommodation through the allocation system may contact the private hostels on and around the UG campus for information on available accommodation.

The public and members of the University community are, therefore, cautioned to be wary of such scams and verify any information received from appropriate UG official channels.

For any assistance or enquiries, do not hesitate to reach out on WhatsApp to the Admission Help Desk on 0200480344 or email admissions@ug.edu.gh.

Thank you.

Distribution of Laptops - One Student One Laptop (1S1L) initiative

Starting November 6, 2023 - Ending November 6, 2024

The Vice Chancellor’s office at the University of Ghana is thrilled to bring to your attention the "One Student One Laptop" (1S1L) initiative which commenced in 2021. This visionary program aims to provide each student with a laptop, a crucial tool for both academic and personal growth.

In today's digital age, technology access is not a luxury but a necessity. The Vice-Chancellor believes that every student should have the opportunity to excel academically, enhance their skills, and prepare for the challenges of the modern world.

Therefore, the 1S1L initiative seeks to address the lack of technology skills caused by the inaccessibility of learning systems and tools that a functional laptop can offer.

To ensure equal access to technology, a select number of laptops will be provided entirely free of charge based on academic performance, financial need, and potential contributions to our academic community. This free laptop assistance is facilitated through the Students Financial Aid Office, eliminating financial barriers to students’ success.

Our inaugural 1S1L distribution took place in August 2022, and we've successfully conducted two more since then.

We're excited to announce the next distribution on November 8, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., which will be held at the Cedi Conference Center. We warmly extend an invitation to everyone to join us for this event.

We also wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated individual and corporate sponsors whose generous support in donating laptops to students has been invaluable, and upon whom we will continue to rely for our 1S1L initiative.’

For those who may not qualify for a free laptop but still need affordable access, we are offering hire purchase options. These laptops will be available to you at a significantly reduced cost, payable in convenient instalments throughout your school year.

In addition to providing laptops, we are establishing an assembling plant on our campus. This facility will not only contribute to student job creation, economic development, and project sustainability, but it will also provide students with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in technology assembly, contributing to skills development and future employability.

This initiative is a testament to the Vice Chancellor’s commitment to student growth and success. The VC believes that access to technology is a fundamental right, and this program is a significant step toward creating a level playing field for all our students.

Additional information on the application and selection process is available on the University’s website.

YOUSUSTAIN Conference 2023: Sustaining Sub-Saharan African Cities Through Youth Ecopreneurship.

Starting November 1, 2023 - Ending November 1, 2024

YOUSUSTAIN CONFERENCE 2023: SUSTAINING SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN CITIES THROUGH YOUTH ECOPRENEURSHIP.

Context

Achieving sustainability in urban cities is a struggle for most countries on the African continent. Although the struggles in some of these cities are unique, shared challenges are ubiquitous across the continent. Poverty, population increase, unemployment, and environmental degradation are the factors that exacerbate this urban sustainability challenge. Young people are the ones affected the most by these negative stressors as they represent the majority of the region’s population and are mostly at the forefront of these stressors.

The rising population of the African continent and the quest for decent living through sustainable livelihood options forces many to migrate to urban areas in the continent. The implications of such growth patterns in fast-urbanizing communities have been grim, especially in land management and its consequential impacts on housing, human settlements, food security, waste and sanitation management, public health, water resources, mobility, disaster risk, and livelihoods. Thus, the problem of sustainability in African cities is underscored and the need for urgent action is highlighted.

Globally, governments are partnering with international development agencies and other stakeholders to create avenues for young people to establish business enterprises. These programmes empower young people with soft and hard skills to increase their employability and improve their capacity for entrepreneurship. These are manifested in job creation hubs to help young people with nano and micro businesses and enhance productivity while promoting urban sustainability. Some of the beneficiaries have established businesses that draw on the nexus between entrepreneurship and sustainability known as ecopreneurship.

For example, young people have established green business models that reintroduce carbon into the soil and prevent nutrient leaching. Others have also set up green businesses that upcycle plastic materials into sellable products like bags, raincoats and curtains sold for income.

Ecopreneurship, as the name suggests, is a business model that operates on environmental sustainability and circular economy principles. Such business principles do not only generate income but also sit at the heart of sustainability through efficient resource use, and a significant cut back on environment degradation.

Sociocultural practices and the lack of financial and technical support for young people in business are The YouSustain Conference seeks to create a platform for young people, developmental agencies, and researchers to have an intellectual discourse on how best young people can be supported to contribute to urban sustainability in sub-Saharan Africa through ecopreneurship the major challenges faced by young Africans as they venture into ecopreneurship. Thus, this has made it difficult to reach out to the broader population of young people on the continent to educate and equip them with the knowledge and wherewithal to contribute their part to the effort to promote sustainability in sub-Saharan African cities.

Conference Objective

. Specifically, the conference seeks to:

-        Provide a networking and resource opportunity for young people involved in ecopreneural businesses to share knowledge and potentially collaborate for green business development.

-        Select viable ecopreneural ideas from the conference and provide them with incubation support and potential grants for their project implementation.

-        Create a platform for young people to showcase their green businesses, products, and services, and gain exposure and visibility for their work to explore avenues for upscaling.

-        Explore how successful practices and solutions for sustainability in sub-Saharan African cities can be transformed into viable youth-led ecopreneurship ventures, and identify the key enabling factors and potential barriers to their establishment and growth.

Thematic areas

The thematic areas to be covered include, but are not limited to the following:

Call for Applications - Building Capacity for Early Career Humanities Scholars in Africa

Starting October 2, 2023 - Ending October 2, 2024

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Building Capacity for

Early Career Humanities Scholars in Africa

Building Capacity for Early Career Humanities Scholars in Africa (BECHS-Africa) is a partnership involving four universities: University of Ghana, American University in Cairo, Stellenbosch University and Washington University in St. Louis, with University of Ghana as the lead Institution. Funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, it is a three-year transnational programme, which seeks to enhance research capacity for early career scholars in the humanities. The programme will fund the travel, housing, and other related costs of selected early career humanities scholars from the four institutions to spend four to six months at one of the other partner institutions.

The aim of the project is to create a space for scholars in the humanities to enhance their research agenda in their early career years. The period of stay (four to six months) in the collaborating institution will allow for targeted mentorship and guidance for the selected scholars by identified senior scholars who share their research interests, while also providing an avenue for interaction and the sharing of research ideas and methodologies with peers. The project is unique in many respects as, unlike some existing initiatives, it seeks to create avenues for early career scholars to have the opportunity of residency across the three regions of Africa as well as at a northern institution.

The Fellowship. The Project provides a four to six-month residency at any of the four collaborating institutions. Support comprises the following:

  1. An economy return flight
  2. Travel Insurance
  3. Accommodation
  4. Office space
  5. A monthly stipend to cover transport, meals, entertainment and other incidentals
  6. Access to library facilities at the host university
  7. Funds to organize a research-focused workshop at the host University
  8. Mentoring from senior faculty at the host institution

Expectations.  Successful applicants are expected to:

  1. Be in residence at the host institution for four to six months
  2. Attend local presentations, conferences and workshops organized by the host institution that are of relevance to the scholar’s research
  3. Attend grant writing and publication workshops offered by the host university
  4. Organize a workshop based on her/his research topic, through which the scholar will receive detailed feedback from leading academics in the field
  5. Fulfill the research and publication goals set out in the original application
  6. Provide a final report
  7. Acknowledge support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in any subsequent publications and provide BECHS-Africa with all citations to publications resulting from the residency.

Eligibility. To be eligible an applicant must:

  1. Be in a full-time permanent post in the humanities in any of the four collaborating institutions
  2. Be an early career scholar with a record of research and academic publishing
  3. Have a PhD that was obtained within the last ten years (2013 or later)
  4. Have a scholarly record of publications commensurate with career stage or years from degree

Collaborating Institutions

The institutions involved in BECHS-Africa have been selected to provide opportunities for fellows to carry out their residency across three regions of Africa: western, southern and northern Africa, as well as at one institution in the United States. The institutions are all highly ranked in the Times Higher Educational Rankings of Universities, are active in research in the humanities and social sciences and have demonstrated high research output. The selection has also been informed by the availability of mentors and adequate library facilities to support a robust and dynamic academic environment. They are:  The University of Ghana (lead institution), American University in Cairo, Stellenbosch University and Washington University in Saint Louis.

Submission of Applications

Eligible candidates should complete the project application coversheet, which can be downloaded here. The completed form must be signed, dated, endorsed and submitted together with the following documents, combined into a single PDF.  Full applications should be submitted electronically via email to bechs-africa@ug.edu.gh.

Arrangements for Students’ Accommodation for 2023/2024 Academic Year

Starting September 27, 2023 - Ending September 27, 2024

Arrangements for Students’ Accommodation

for 2023/2024 Academic Year

The Residence Board has deliberated on accommodation arrangements for the 2023/2024 academic year and made the following decisions:

  • As was indicated at the beginning of the 2022/2023 academic year, and in consonance with the In-Out-Out-Out policy which came into effect in the 2022/2023 academic year, the traditional halls will be progressively reserved for fresh students only. All first-year undergraduate students who were given accommodation in traditional halls for the 2022/2023 academic year would have to apply for accommodation in the UGEL Halls, private hostels or any of the off-campus accommodation facilities from the 2023/2024 academic year.

  • Students with Special Needs and Levels 300 and 400 students who resided in traditional halls for the 2022/2023 academic year, will continue to retain their residence until completion.

  • A new random bed assignment system designed by UGCS will be implemented for the 2023/2024 academic year, beginning with the allocation of beds to continuing students in the UGEL halls. This forms part of recommendations by a committee set up by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) to develop a new, transparent and equitable room allocation/balloting system for students.

  • Random assignment of beds to students will be conducted openly to allow all stakeholders to observe the transparency in the process.

  • The new bed allocation system will provide 60% of available spaces in the UGEL Halls for Level 200/second year undergraduate students, and 20% each for undergraduate students in Level 300 and Level 400.

  • The new system will also be used to assign all beds in the traditional halls to first year/Level 100 students beginning their programmes in the 2023/2024 academic year.

  • Students interested in being considered in the random assignment of beds would have to opt-in after completing their academic registration. A web link (https://sts.ug.edu.gh/) will be embedded in their online registration processes for the purpose. Those who have already completed their academic registration can use this link https://sts.ug.edu.gh/ to get into the portal.

  • As part of the new system, nearly all beds will be assigned randomly through the new system developed by the UGCS; only a limited number of beds will be reserved at the hall level for critical needs (e.g. students with special needs). Therefore, all students seeking University accommodation are highly encouraged to ensure their early registration, and completion of the form by which to indicate interest in being included in the random assignment exercise.

  • Random bed allocation for UGEL halls will take place on Friday October 6, 2023 at 10am.  Therefore, students who wish to be included must sign-up by Thursday October 5,2023.

While the University makes efforts to increase its residential facilities, Management would like to reiterate that accommodation is not tied to admission into the University. Students who are, unfortunately, not successful in securing any of the available spaces on campus would have to make alternative accommodation arrangements.

The University wishes to reiterate that under no circumstance should any student or parent/guardian pay money to anyone for a bed.  This is illegal and both the seller and buyer will be violating the regulations of the University and will be sanctioned accordingly.

Students must also take note that “perching” is illegal and that defaulting students will face the necessary disciplinary procedures and sanctions if found guilty.

University of Ghana-Carnegie Writing Centre Workshopping Series No. 3: Writing Your Methodology

Starting April 12, 2023 - Ending April 12, 2024

The University of Ghana-Carnegie Writing Centre (UG-CWC), in Collaboration with the Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI), University of Ghana, invites graduate students of the University who are in their thesis year to the next in the Workshopping Series.

Details of the workshop are as follows:

Date: 19-20 April 2023

Venue: Biotechnology Centre Conference room (Near West African Centre for Crop Improvement)

Kindly register using the link below. Deadline for registration is Monday 17th April 2023.

https://forms.gle/V5P1J7bqMR7eBPCa8

Workshop overview

The UG-Carnegie Writing Centre/CTLI Workshopping Series focus on face-to-face coaching on specific sections of a writing project: introduction, literature review, methodology, analysis and discussion of results, and conclusions. The workshopping sessions deliver hands-on training for participants to work through various stages of their draft manuscripts. This module is intended to help students improve their writing of the methodology section of their thesis.

The methodology section is an essential part of your thesis/scholarly writing, as it enables you to answer the question of how the research questions were addressed (i.e., what materials and/or methods/experimental methods were used). The section may outline the methodologies applied to answer the research questions; the application of existing methods, theory and tools; or principles, concepts and models on which data collection or fieldwork is based. The form for each person’s methodology section may vary, but the building blocks are similar.

This workshop will guide you through the logical structure, language and style features of research methodology. An efficient use of these features will enable readers to understand/assess/validate how you studied the problem, the steps/procedures you followed in seeking answers to research questions and in what order, the replicability of experiments, etc. These features of language and style include tense, voice, point of view, precision & directness in describing design and procedure (e.g., avoiding wordiness, redundancy, nominalisation etc.), and how to maintain objectivity. Others include tools used to achieve coherence and clarity (e.g., by eliminating ambiguity and vagueness).

This two-day programme will therefore provide thorough, step-by-step, one-on-one practical sessions for writing a good methodology section. Participants must submit their draft methodology chapters before the workshop begins. They will then work with the resource persons during the sessions to review, revise, rewrite or fine tune their drafts. The goal is to help each participant produce a methodology section that communicates clearly and logically the steps/procedures adopted to answer research questions in the thesis.

Objectives of the Workshop

· Guide participants to apply the linguistic resources that are critical to writing a methodology for a thesis/scholarly paper

· Help students understand and practice writing the methodology as a structured narrative

· Offer hands-on practice in revising and improving the clarity and flow of the methodology section

Structure of the Module

This module will be delivered through the following topics.

1. Writing methodologies as narratives: Linguistic resources

2. From paragraph to chapter: The structure of the methodology as a narrative

3. Conveying detail: The language of description in methodologies

Statement in Response to Comments by Some Members of Parliament on the New UG Residential Policy

Starting March 30, 2023 - Ending March 30, 2024

Management of the University of Ghana has noted, with grave concern, comments by some Members of Parliament about the new UG residential policy which sought to create the impression that the University is flouting a court order and, therefore, disrespecting the Judiciary, the Constitution and the mandate of the good people of Ghana. The University notes some inaccuracies in the statements made on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. Below, we provide these facts to set the records straight.

  • Following the order of injunction issued by the High Court asking the University to halt implementation of the new policy, the University stopped further assignments to Commonwealth Hall. By that time, new students assigned were already in residence. Contrary to the allegations and impression created on the Floor of Parliament, the University has not violated any court order.

  • The University has also exercised its legal rights by appealing against the court order as well as requesting for a Stay of Execution of the order of injunction.

  • The University is governed by a Council, made up of persons of high repute, who are committed to ensuring the welfare of students and a conducive environment for teaching and learning. It must be stressed that the implementation of the new residential policy had been done before the court issued the order of injunction.

  • The reporting date for fresh men and women for the start of the 2022/2023 academic year was January 4, 2023, which preceded receipt of the order of injunction. Prior to this, freshers had already selected rooms from the available slots through an online platform. Accordingly, all fresh men assigned to Commonwealth Hall moved in upon reporting on January 4, 2023.

  • It must be stressed that allocation of rooms to freshers assigned to Commonwealth Hall ceased immediately notice of the injunction was received, and has not been resumed.

  • The University gave all continuing students who were previously legally resident in Commonwealth Hall the opportunity to take up rooms in the UGEL halls. As at 30th March, 2023, 91% of these continuing students had accepted the offer, paid, and are currently in occupancy in the UGEL halls. Students who genuinely had difficulty in paying and explained their situation to Management were duly provided support through the University’s Student Financial Aid Office.

The University would like to put on record that traditional halls are not assigned to students in perpetuity.

The new residential policy, where accommodation in traditional halls is reserved for freshers, is being rolled out progressively, starting from Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall. The policy is to enable freshers settle in easily into university life in the first year.

We wish to emphasise that the new residential policy is not a punishment and no student who accepted the accommodation offer at the UGEL halls was denied residence, as members of the public are being made to believe.

Academic work at the University is progressing steadily, and students are preparing for end-of-semester examinations.

We reiterate that the University of Ghana is a law-abiding institution. Further, we encourage all aggrieved persons including alumni of the affected halls to engage with the University to understand the purpose and need for the new policy. The University of Ghana is deeply concerned about the welfare and security of our students, staff and all other stakeholders and will do everything in its power to protect them.

Director of Public Affairs
