NMIMR H3ABioNet Advanced Bioinformatics Workshop: Introduction to Next-Generation Sequence Analysis

Starting January 1, 2001 - Ending January 1, 2001 Expired

The Workshop Overview:

In keeping with the H3ABioNet Consortium's mandate to build and develop bioinformatics capacity in Africa, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) Node will hold an H3ABioNet-funded Advanced Bioinformatics Workshop.  This is the last in the series of workshops for Year 2 and will complement the successful Introductory and Intermediate Bioinformatics Workshops held respectively in March and July, 2014.

The aim of the workshop is to enhance bioinformatics research capacity within the University community and reposition bioinformatics and computatioanl biology as a major thematic research area in the university and associated genomic research facilities.  This workshop will focus on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis; one of the focal research areas of the H3Africa Consortium. Participants will be introduced to NGS platforms as well as Bioinformatics resources for NGS data analysis with emphasis on variants calling. The modules for the workshop will be based on freely available software,  and data from public databases. Modules will consist of lectures, demonstrations and hands-on tutorials.

Venue: Noguchi Conference Room

Date: 20-24 October 2014

Time: 9am to 4pm daily

The Workshop Topics:

The five day period workshop will include the following topics:

  • Introduction to NGS
  • Quality control of raw Illumina data
  • Alignment of Illumina data to reference sequence
  • Manual and automated variant calling
  • Evaluating the biological impact of variant calls

Considerations:

  • Consideration will be given to participants of the previous workshop to ensure continuity in knowledge acquisition.
  • A new applicant with basic knowledge of Bioinformatics, the Linux OS and some basic molecular biology knowledge would be considered.
  • Staff and graduate students who are interested in Bioinformatics and will be available for the whole period of the workshop are welcome to apply.

How to apply:

To be considered for selection, click on Application Form and provide the necessary information by 8th October 2014.

NB: Successful applicants will be expected to come with wireless-enabled laptop computers with 2G free RAM and 12G Hard Disk space.
