Africa Climate Change Adaptation Initiative (ACCAI)

The Africa Climate Change Adaptation Initiative (ACCAI) was established in 2010 with funding from the Open Society Foundations, with the aim of strengthening the capacity of African universities in research and training so they form a network of experts capable of producing reliable and useful information to feed pan-African policy and initiatives to adapt to climate change.  Currently, the ACCAI network includes six universities:

  •   Mekelle University (Ethiopia),
  •    University of Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania),
  •    University of Ghana (Ghana),
  •    University of Nigeria-Nsukka (Nigeria),
  •    University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa)
  •     University of Stellenbosch (South Africa)

The activities of the ACCAI network during the first four years of its existence (Phase I) focused on curricula development and introduction of new Masters and PhD level courses in climate change and sustainable development to contribute to expertise in these areas within Africa, delivery of short courses including transdiciplinary research methods; targeted research and publications on various aspects of climate change adaptation, as well as outreach programmes working with communities to enhance their awareness of climate change issues and ability to embrace adaptation measures.  While continuing to consolidate the activities initiated in the ACCAI Phase 1, the ACCAI Network has embarked on a new project on climate change and food systems in its second Phase. The project, Co-producing knowledge on food systems for development in Africa” aims to contribute to expertise, knowledge and development of implementable policies in Africa to guarantee food security.

The ACCAI Network invites students of its partner Universities to participate in a competition to design a logo for ACCAI.

Considerations:   We see ourselves as a versatile network which will adapt to a changing research landscape over time. So while ACCAI’s current research focus may be on food systems, in years to come this might change, to another climate related focus area. The logo should be versatile enough to remain relevant in the face of such changes. As such when considering design options. it would be preferable to emphasise the spirit of pan-African research collaboration in the face of climate change”

The logo would be primarily for website based applications, but must be versatile enough to be used across a number of other digital and print platforms including email signatures, banners and letterheads. Ideally the logo should be functional in both full colour and black and white.”

Eligibility:       Participants must be students of any of the six ACCAI Partner Universities.
