PhD Course: Transdisciplinary Research in Climate Change for PhD Students

 

OBJECTIVE

This PhD course will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the nature of climate change, its impacts of natural and managed ecosystems and a deeper understanding of adaptation to climate change, with a focus on how these issues can be adopted within a Ghanaian context. The course is open to both Masters and PhD candidates within the relevant programs in order to provide a solid foundation for further thesis research on issues related to climate change impacts and adaptation.

The course will include a combination of lectures, theoretical exercises and group work on chosen topics with climate change mechanisms, their impacts and adaptation. The results of the theoretical exercises and group work should be summarized by the students in a short report to be evaluated after the course

 

COURSE CONTENT

The course content will comprise:

·         General background on greenhouse gases and climate change

·         Effects of climate change and atmospheric CO2 on net primary productivity

·         Impacts of climate change on water resources and agroecosystems

·         Adaptation to climate change, possibilities and costs

·         Community based adaptations
