Dr. Benjamin Arko-Boham has a PhD in Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology with specialty in Tunour Cell Biology from Dalian Medical University, PR China. He also holds Masters (Human Anatomy) and BSc (Zoology) from the University of Ghana where he has worked since 2007 as a fulltime faculty member and is involved in teaching and research. His research activities concentrate on cancer biology and biomarker detection with principal focus on breast cancer. He is interested in unravelling and understanding the unique genetic alterations and mechanisms underpinning the aggressiveness of African cancers. He also focuses on blood plasma studies for the identification of potential cancer diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. He has a number of publications to his credit and serves as reviewer for several international journals. He also serves on several institutional ethics boards, committees. He is fellow of the West African College of Morphologist (WACM).

RESEARCH AREA
His research activities are in the area of cancer biology and biomarker detection with principal focus on breast cancer. He is interested in unravelling and understanding the unique genetic alterations and mechanisms underpinning the aggressiveness of African cancers. He is also interested in blood plasma studies for the identification potential cancer diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
His interests are in three directions:
1. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer aggressiveness in Africans. It is asserted that the aggressive forms of breast cancers observed among African populations is largely due to the fact that the African population is relatively young and breast cancer in general is aggressive among the young. But this cannot be entirely true. Opponents of the assertion are of the view that there are rather genetic undertones to the trend. He is interested in focusing his research in a direction to unravel the major genes that are responsible for the aggressive versions of breast cancer peculiar to Africans in the light of targeted therapy.

2. To understand the biological alterations in cancer cells involving epithelial-mesenchymal transition leading to tumour metastasis. The mechanisms by which epithelial cells lose their epithelial properties and become liberated and translocated is not well understood. This is what propels cancer cell metastasis. He is interested in understanding the processes that lead to the epithelial-mesenchymal transition that under girth metastasis, a hallmark of aggressive cancers. A better insight into this phenomenon will shape our understanding of cancer cell metastasis control.

3. Identification of blood biomarkers for cancers diagnosis, prognosis and/or monitoring. There should be a way of non-invasively detecting and/or predicting the outcomes of cancers. He is interested in screening blood and its constituents for potential biomarkers in relation to cancer detection and prognosis.
